Diflucan is prescribed for oral, esophageal, urinary, vaginal and probably other organ infections caused by the fungus Candida. It has also been used in the fungal infection, Cryptococcus. Tablets are available in 50mg and 150mg

Generic name: Fluconazole

Drug Class And Mechanism: Antifungal (treatment of certain fungus infections).

Dosing: Fluconazole is taken orally or by intravenous injection. If the patient has impaired renal function or if taking certain other medications at the same time, modified dosing is required. If taking other medications with fluconazole, please check with your pharmacist or physician. The medication can be used in children and has been effectual down to the age of 6 months of age. In rare cases, it can cause liver damage. So, the liver should be monitored if taken for numerous days.

Drug Interactions: Caution if taking certain other medications with fluconazole such as cyclosporin, phenytoin, coumadin and theophylline. Notify your doctor, if a rash occurs when taking this medication.

Pregnancy: In pregnancy, use of fluconazole is not usually recommended.

Nursing Mothers: Usually, the use of fluconazole in nursing mothers is not recommended.
Side Effects: The incidence of side effects from this drug is fairly high (up to 25%). The majority (13%) may get headaches. A few patients develop abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness or diarrhea. Rigorous skin rash may take place but is uncommon.
Storage: Stock up tablets in a dry place at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 F), oral suspensions after dilution at 5-30 degrees C (41-86 F) the oral suspension should be thrown away in 2 weeks after reconstituted.

An antifungal antibiotic, Diflucan is used to treat infections caused by fungus that affects parts of the body including the throat, esophagus, mouth, bladder, genital area, lungs and the blood. With generic name fluconazole, it is also used to defer fungal infection like meningitis caused by yeast and in people with weak immune systems caused by bone marrow transplant, diseases such as AIDS or cancer treatment. Diflucan is sold over the counter as Alfumet in Mexico.

The suggested dosage of fluconazole is precisely as prescribed by doctor. If a dose is missing, take the missed dose as soon as it is remembered. If it is the time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule. If an overdose of this medicine is detected, seek emergency medical attention. Overdose symptoms may include confusion or unusual thoughts/behavior. Store the medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Diflucan side effects includes hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/ throat, difficulty in breathing, nausea, low fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, clay-coloured stools, dark urine, jaundice, chills, fever, body aches, severe blistering, flu symptoms, peeling, unusual weakness, easy bruising or bleeding, seizure, dizziness, headache, unusual or disagreeable taste in mouth.
In tablet form of 50mg and 150mg, Fluconazole is available. It is taken orally or by intravenous injection. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment, consult your doctor before taking this medication. This remedy can pass into breast milk and may harm nursing baby.
Other drugs that can affect Diflucan include gengraf, glucotrol, coumadin, orinase, glynase, lorazepam, rifabutin, diazepam, theophylline, phenytoin or tacrolimus. It is worthwhile to ask doctor before taking the drug about all prescriptions and over the counter medications use by patient.
